Understanding National Pension System (NPS)

The National Pension System (NPS) is a SEBI & PFRDA-regulated voluntary retirement savings scheme designed to enable systematic savings during your working years and provide a steady monthly income after retirement.

Key NPS Rules & Tax Benefits

  • Additional Tax Deduction (Sec 80CCD 1B): Enjoy an exclusive tax deduction of up to ₹50,000 per year over and above the ₹1.5 Lakh limit under Section 80C.
  • Tax-Free Lumpsum Withdrawal (60%): Upon reaching superannuation at age 60, up to 60% of the accumulated corpus can be withdrawn as a tax-free lump sum.
  • Mandatory Annuity Purchase (40%): A minimum of 40% of the corpus must be used to purchase an annuity policy from a PFRDA-registered Annuity Service Provider to generate a lifelong monthly pension.
  • Asset Allocation Choices: Flexible mix of Equity (E), Corporate Bonds (C), Government Securities (G), and Alternative Assets (A).

Worked Example

If an investor starts contributing ₹5,000/month at age 30 until age 60 at an expected 10% annual return, the total investment of ₹18 Lakhs grows into a retirement corpus of approximately ₹1.13 Crore. At retirement, ₹67.8 Lakhs (60%) can be withdrawn 100% tax-free, while ₹45.2 Lakhs (40%) generates an estimated monthly pension of ₹22,600 at a 6% annuity rate.
